If you find that your phone is dead or has no dial tone, look for symptoms like cracks in the telephone, a broken or frayed cord or phone lights that don’t work. To diagnose a problem, check for one or more of these symptoms:

1. Check all telephones to ensure that the receivers are on the hook.
2. If you have a cordless phone, the battery may be low. Make sure the battery is charged.
3. Unplug each telephone device one at a time (a telephone device may be a telephone set, cordless telephone, answering machine, fax machine or satellite receiver).
4. After unplugging the first device, wait a few minutes, and then check the next telephone for dial tone. Continue to unplug and test the remaining telephone devices one at a time.
5. If all telephone devices except one have been unplugged and you still have no dial tone, unplug the last telephone. Then, plug in the first telephone you removed and test it. If the problem clears, the last telephone you unplugged is likely the cause of “no dial tone”.
6. If you have discovered the faulty piece of equipment, replace it or have it repaired.
